Amaris Wildlife Sanctuary

I’m Maggie van Santen and “inspiring hope and healing for Australia’s wildlife, one rescue at a time” are the words I live by.

While raising orphaned kangaroos takes up the bulk of my time, I also rescue and rehabilitate, possums, bobtails, owls, echidnas and more

This site was created to help raise awareness of the special needs of our wildlife by sharing my experiences, and to also help raise the funds needed to look after all of these beautiful animals.

Dr. Howard Ralph is a veterinary surgeon, anaesthetist, and medical doctor with additional qualifications in wildlife medicine, clinical forensics and animal education .With over four decades of experience treating both humans and animals, he is widely recognised for his contributions to wildlife care and education. Dr Ralph has taught wildlife treatment across Australia and internationally in countries such as Indonesia and Nepal.

He has also provided veterinary support during natural disasters including bushfires, floods, and oil spills, and works with Tree of Compassion in Nepal. “If I can do something to alleviate the stress, pain and suffering of these animals…that’s why I do this work.”

Welcome to Possumwood Wildlife

The Founders

Professor Steve Garlick

Dr. Rosemary Austen

Possumwood Wildlife is a self-funded facility established by Prof. Steve Garlick and Dr. Rosemary Austen, that helps with the recovery of severely injured and traumatised native animals and undertakes engagement and research to learn more about the behaviour of these unique animals.

The work done at the recovery centre and fully equipped licensed veterinary hospital is made possible by private donations. The facility relies on voluntary staff, including veterinary nurses and a visiting veterinarian and takes in around 400 to 500 injured, ill or orphaned wild animals each year.
